According to Britannica, this animal once roamed the fields of the Australian mainland but was wiped out thousands of years ago. It is now restricted to the southernmost state, for which it was named. Welcome the Tasmanian Devil.
Can it get scarier than that? Perhaps we’re getting a hint as to why this fellow bears that name.
The tasmanian devil(sarcophilus harrisii) is a rare kind— a carnivorous marsupial, says Britannica, and the largest one at that! About the size of a small dog, it looks like a cross between a bear and a rat and is found exclusively on the Australian island state of Tasmania.
The title ‘Tasmanian Devil' came from the first European settlers who first entered the state. They began hearing mysterious and unearthly screams and growls from deep within the bush at night, Encarta Encyclopedia reveals.
These cries were like nothing they had ever heard from an animal, making settlers believe they were evil spirits from the devil himself! Pound for pound, it has the most powerful bite of all animals in the world! Its shrill cry and fiery temper also contributed to its name, says Encarta.
It is a scavenger, feeding on the carcass of dead animals, though it may feed on small animals like mice and lizards.
I, too, am well aware of this creature. Back in my days in law enforcement, I gained the call sign, and nickname, “TAZ”, for the Tasmanian Devil. On certain calls, mostly domestic where a woman, and/or child had been abused, I was very well know to ‘lose my cool’ and forget about the badge I was wearing.
One such incident happened when I responded to a house fire with the fire department. At the call, I was only a couple blocks away and it was reported people were in the house. Arriving, the neighbor screamed that the wife and child were in the home. I ran in, finding the child in her crib, which was burning. The mother was on the floor by the crib. I picked both up and got them out of the house. The mother and child were rushed to the hospital where the child passed the following day. The mother was transported to the burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. She had suffered a severe beating at the hands of her husband. The child had been beaten, sexually assaulted, and burned over 60% of her body.
The husband, father, had gotten drunk. When his wife refused him sexually, he beat her unconscious. Raped and beat the child. Then he poured gasoline through the house, and in the crib. Set it in fire and left.
After I got the mother and baby out if the house, the ambulance had arrived as the fire department was pulling in. My partner pulled in as I got into my patrol unit. I sped out of there and went hunting. I found the man at the bar. I didn’t say a word to him. I hi him with everything I had. Knocked him off his bar stool, and beat him unconscious. It took 4 men to pull me off this piece of garbage. When he came to in the hospital, I was there. I handcuffed him to his hospital bed, and I made him a promise.
I promised him if he ever laid eyes on his wife again, I would hunt him down and finish the job I started. I would see to it he was put in the ground. I meant every word I told him.
He ended up sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
